This is a painting of a reclining, black woman. She is lying on a white sheet/ an abstract white surface, with her back to the viewer and she is looking at the sea. Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid, was my inspiration for this painting. The woman depicted here is Dido, the queen of Carthage. After the fall of Troy, Aeneas the protagonist of the Aeneid travelled to Rome to become the ancestor of the Romans. On his journey across the Mediterranean he visited Carthage and Dido and Aeneas became lovers. But Aeneas moves on, leaving Dido heartbroken. In this painting she is staring across the sea that transported her lover away.
