A painting of a seated female nude in front of a seascape. The dark-haired woman is sitting on a golden ledge with her legs pulled up and her arms crossed in front of her. This picture was inspired by Margaret Atwood’s Penelopiad, her retelling of Homers’ Odyssey from the viewpoint of Odysseus’ wife Penelope. This is my portrait of Penelope. After Odysseus leaves to fight in the Trojan war and later travels the Mediterranean, queen Penelope has to hold off a whole army of suitors who all claim her because Odysseus is away. Her cunning and perseverance to fend them off and do it her way really inspired me. Therefore she is painted naked in a defiant pose with her back against a seascape: whatever the sea brings, she can deal with it on her own. The bottom part of the picture is a brick red chosen to represent the dry earth in contrast to the water. The golden ledge indicates her royalty.
