19.7x19.7 in ~ Painting, Oil
This painting shows a bearded dark-haired man embracing the torso of a naked, dark-haired woman. The woman is painted in profile, standing and bending backwards in front of a golden rectangle in the left part of the painting. The man is painted in the right part of the painting, seated in front of a seascape. This picture was inspired by the epic poem The Odyssey attributed to Homer. It shows the protagonist, Odysseus embracing the nymph Calypso. She was a beautiful woman living on a mythological island in the Mediterranean. When Odysseus travelled home after the fall of Troy he visited her island and fell in love with her. Calypso detained Odysseus and his crew for seven years, before they could resume their itinerary. So I painted him clinging onto her with his back to the sea and used an abstract golden rectangle to surround her to symbolize the hold this love affair had over Odysseus.
