23.6x15.8 in ~ Painting, Oil
A painting of a naked, kneeling man, facing left and carrying a globe with the sky on his back. The man is kneeling on a yellow surface. The background of the painting is black.
This picture was inspired by classical greek mythology. More specifically by Weight, Jeannette Winterson’s retelling of the myth of Atlas. This painting depicts Atlas, a titan who rebelled against the gods of the Olympus. As punishment for this rebellion he had to carry the sky on his shoulders for eternity. To signify the endless character of his punishment I have painted him kneeling at the edge of the world surrounded by eternal darkness, while he carries his burden.
